Volumetric Weight Explained

Volumetric weight, also known as dimensional weight is used by our courier companies to work out how much space that a parcel takes up in a vehicle or airplane during transit.

Large items with a light overall weight can be charged according to the space it takes up on a aircraft or vehicle. In this case, volumetric weight is used to calculate parcel costs.

We recommend that you calculate the volumetric weight for every shipment that you send and then compare this to the actual weight.

The courier companies we use charge customers by whichever is greater either the volumetric weight or actual weight.

Australian Domestic Volumetric Weight Example

If you have a parcel that you are sending with Australian Air Express and the package measurements are  50cm length x  32cm width x 27cm height and the actual weight is 5kg, but the volumetric weight comes to 10.8 kg.

For this example you will be charged the volumetric weight of 10.8kg as this is greater than the actual weight.

International Volumetric Weight Example

If you have a package that you are sending with either DHL or Fedex Express and the package measurements are  30cm length x  30cm width x 20cm height and the actual weight is 2kg, but the volumetric weight comes to 3.6kg.

For this example the shipping costs will be based on 3.6kg volumetric weight as it is greater than the actual weight.
